Dean Cottage and Ortona
Sunday 20th August 2pm - 5pm
Dean Cottage, 5 East Rossdhu Drive G84 7ST
The garden is only four years old - planted by the current owners. Twenty tons of gravel were laid over weed mat, designed to be low maintenance. There are lots of pots but also raised and herbaceous beds and a little pond. There is a small orchard, a fig tree, magnolias and soft fruit.
Our speciality is hydrangeas - almost all grown from cuttings, likewise hebes and hostas. This is a wildlife friendly garden with birds, bees butterflies and a nocturnal hedgehog. The garden is disabled friendly, very level, but not suitable for wheelchairs as there is a lot of gravel.
Ortona, 41 Charlotte Street G84 7SE
Is about a third of an acre around a 1906 Leiper designed house. The east hedge was planted during wartime following removal of railings. The north and west side have leylandii hedges planted in 1971 to replace a mixed hawthorn hedge and is kept at its present height and width by one cut a year in late July. The terracing rockeries were constructed in 1967 and enlarged since by the present owners, and all the trees and plants, some unusual, some delightlfully ordinary and floriferous, have been planted over the years.
